A "Timed Sprint" car race, with a particular emphasis on Historic vehicles, which is run on a 1.4km Hot Mix circuit through the streets of Murwillumbah on the beautiful Tweed River. Organised by a group of local enthusiasts and the Murwillumbah Rotary Club, proceeds from the event are distributed to the local hospital and other charities. The inaugural event took place in 2002 accompanied by a street parade and display of participating vehicles in the Murwillumbah main street on the Friday evening. It was such a success that the organisers immediately committed to making this an annual event. Tweed Valley Banana Festival and Harvest Week One of the major annual events in the Tweed Valley is the annual Tweed Valley Banana Festival and Harvest Week. Held over the last week of August each year, the festival comprises many displays, concerts, sporting special fixtures, art shows, garden competitions and much more. The main day features a parade of floats through the streets of Murwillumbah commencing at 12.30pm. Over 150 floats representing Festival Queen candidates, community groups, commercial entries and religious groups make a fascinating procession to the Murwillumbah Showground where a carnival continues into the night. Tyalgum Diggers District Sports Day / Night Rodeo A rich heritage of annual events includes the Tyalgum Diggers District Sports Day / Night Rodeo. The village of Tyalgum, 30 kilometres west of Murwillumbah comes alive for this annual event held at the Tyalgum Showground. A rodeo, wood chops, and much more keeps both children and adults entertained. A great family fun day, this event recalls the fun and excitement of the traditional village celebration. The Tweed River Agricultural Show The Tweed River Agricultural Show is held on the first weekend (on Friday and Saturday) in November each year at the Murwillumbah Showground. The show features interesting displays from the agricultural industries of the Tweed Valley and many entertaining events for all ages. A fascinating program is always planned and everyone who attends will find something of interest. Tyalgum Annual Festival of Classical Music For a change of pace, a visit to the Tyalgum Annual Festival of Classical Music brings the love of fine musical performances to the fore. Each year at Tyalgum there is a series of performances of fine instrumental and vocal classical music pieces by leading artists. One may wonder "Why the village of Tyalgum in the Tweed Valley?" The answer lies in the extraordinary acoustics of the Tyalgum Hall, the reason for so many top classical artists returning each year to present their best performances. Lovers of fine music must make every effort to experience this unique event. Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts The Murwillumbah Festival of Performing Arts is held annually at the Murwillumbah Civic Centre in late June to early July. Several hundred performances are presented in Music, Speech and Drama and Dance categories. Performers compete in age and open classes. Many of the young performers have gone on to become professional entertainers in their fields. A platform to share and celebrate community efforts in the areas of reconciliation, environmental and spiritual awareness and the development of sustainable technologies in the region. Program includes a Bundjalung ceremony and other indigenous performances, Elder's circles, musical and dance entertainment, forums, workshops, key speakers and environmental displays as well as night-time concerts.
